Meringues are always a sugary treat, and they are very delicious. If you are gluten-free, they are often your only option on a dessert menu when you eat out.
These ones are particularly delicious sandwiched together with cream (if you are not dairy free) and served with strawberries or whatever fruit is in season. I have tried to reduce the sugar slightly in these but if you reduce it too much, the meringues turn out flat.
I have added hazelnuts for texture and flavour and to give them a bit of a nutritional boost. The 50g hazelnuts have 7.5mg vitamin E which is a good antioxidant, 0.3mg of vitamin B1 (thiamine) which helps support energy metabolism, and 57mcg of folate which helps make healthy red blood cells.
But mostly, you will want to eat these for the fabulous sensation of the meringue melting on your tongue and the sugar hit!
